 2023 Preview

Russell County finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Russell County finished sixth in Class 6A region two with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Warriors last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Since 2010, the Russell County football program has struggled with a record of 31-98.

Over the past 25 seasons, Russell County has not won much with a record of 58-191. Their 23.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 6A and 378th in the AHSAA. The Warriors have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time.

The Warriors are led by head coach Dillon Griggs who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 9-11 over the past two seasons at Russell County. The Warriors have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Griggs.

The Warriors will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season.

QB Robert Calhoun will be returning after completing 103 of 189 passes for 1,283 yards last season along with 10 touchdowns.

The Warriors open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Harris County GA on Friday, August 25.

Russell County and Harris County GA have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 6-5-1 record against Harris County GA. They last met in 2022 with Russell County winning by a score of 28-17.

Russell County lost 6A All-State  athlete Drew Pickett to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
